So my SIG is for people with special interest in Drama/Dance instruction/teaching and also for people who may have or began thinking about opening small businesses within these subjects, for example; dance schools, drama schools, home tutoring, even just classes. Please do comment with twitter, facebook links and we can get discussions going.

  • Do you need advice on opening a performing arts business?
  • Have you opened your own business and have some advice for new business peers?
  • Do you have any questions or answers about the importance of the arts in a child's development?

  1. Hi Rebecca,
I think it is always advisable to gain knowledge and information before starting or during the start-up of any business. I guess it's more a case of ensuring that you don't miss any important aspects early on rather then tripping up later on down the line. It should be part of your early planning stages.

I guess this also answers your second question - on my Blog for Module One, I remember writing about how I plan my business ideas and my strategy. It may be interesting for us to compare?
For the third question, this is a lot more in depth. I teach drama at Stagecoach every weekend and I have witnessed children gaining confidence and life skills through dance, drama and singing. I shall have a think and get back to you...

Did you receive the email from Middlesex Uni regarding the business advice available - I am planning to attend on Tues 30th Oct before the second campus session. Do you live close enough yo attend?

    Best Wishes,
    Jo

  2. Hi Jo,

Thanks for your comment. I never really sat down and wrote out my business strategies. My mum and dad both have their own businesses and I just learnt from them. I surprised myself at how business minded I am. I haven't needed much prompting on that side of things. It's more the self employed thing that worries me. How are you getting on with it all?
I totally agree with your opinion that dance and drama helps a child to develop and it gives then confident but I don't know if this is true for all children. I am guessing it may be to do with the intensity of a performing arts course they undertake?

I live in Bucks and I work everyday so it is quite hard to get into Uni. What is the session exactly? Business help?

    Thanks :)

    Rebecca

  3. Hi Rebecca,

I am not involved in my own business, as I mainly work for other people. I'm sure I should pay attention to these things though as we never know what is around the corner, at the moment though I am concentrating on teaching. I work within recreational dance training and also special needs and so have a big interest in your last question. I have lots of questions about the benefits of dance and performing arts and how they can develop all kinds of people not just children, I have started a SIG on linkedin, please visit my blog and follow the link if it interests you!
